Can NDIS Funding Be Used for Lawn Mowing?

Sometimes, yes. Lawn and yard maintenance is not a support the NDIS attaches to a diagnosis and funds automatically. It is assessed as a household task, and the question the NDIA asks is whether the participant needs help with that task because of their disability.

In practice, three things usually have to line up. The participant cannot safely do the work themselves because of their disability. No other adult in the household can reasonably take it on. And the support has to satisfy the reasonable and necessary criteria set out in section 34 of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013, which includes being related to the participant's disability, representing value for money, and being something it is appropriate for the NDIS to fund rather than another system.

That last point matters. If the yard work is unrelated to disability, or if the participant would have paid a mowing service regardless, the NDIA is likely to treat it as an ordinary living cost. Nobody can promise you funding from a website, and you should be sceptical of any provider who does. Your plan manager, support coordinator or local area coordinator is the right person to confirm whether your plan can pay for it.

Which NDIS Budget Category Covers Yard Maintenance?

Where it is funded, lawn mowing sits in your Core Supports budget, under the support category Assistance with Daily Life. Within that category, yard work is grouped with household tasks such as cleaning and laundry rather than with personal care or community access.

Core Supports funding is generally the most flexible part of a plan, and participants are often able to move funds between core categories without a plan review. That flexibility is the reason many participants find they can arrange yard maintenance even when it was never discussed at their planning meeting. It is also why it is worth asking the question rather than assuming the answer.

Capacity Building and Capital budgets do not cover mowing. Capital is for assistive technology and home modifications, and Capacity Building is for supports that build a participant's skills and independence. If someone tells you your mowing can come out of either of those, check it carefully.

Maintenance Versus Landscaping: Where the Line Sits

The distinction that decides most yard-related claims is maintenance versus improvement. Keeping grass down, edges clear, paths unobstructed and clippings removed is maintenance, and it has a direct connection to safe access around a home. New turf, garden beds, planting, retaining walls and decorative work are improvements to the property, and improvements are not usually an NDIS support.

That has a practical consequence for how you book. If you want the lawn maintained under your plan and a new garden bed built at the same time, ask for two separate quotes and two separate invoices so the maintenance work is not muddled with work your plan will not pay for. We are happy to split them.

How Self-Managed, Plan-Managed and NDIA-Managed Participants Book

Self-managed participants have the widest choice. You can engage any provider you like, registered or not, and you negotiate the price directly. You pay our invoice and then claim the amount through the myplace participant portal, so keep every invoice and receipt. Self-managed participants are also responsible for keeping records for audit, which is the main reason we make invoices plain and consistent rather than clever.

Plan-managed participants have a registered plan manager who handles the money. You still choose the provider, including unregistered ones, and your plan manager pays our invoice from your budget. Practically, this is the easiest arrangement: you give us your plan manager's email at booking, we send the invoice there after each visit, and you never handle the payment yourself.

NDIA-managed participants have their claims made through the myplace provider portal, which works differently to the other two arrangements. If your plan is agency-managed, give us a call before booking and we will talk through what can be arranged. If you are not sure how your plan is managed, it is written on the front of your plan and your plan manager or local area coordinator can confirm it in a phone call.

What Your Plan Manager Needs on the Invoice

Most delays in getting a yard maintenance invoice paid come down to missing details, not disputed funding. Plan managers process high volumes and will hold anything they cannot match to a participant and a date. Every Jay Pro invoice carries:

  • Our business name and ABN, and a unique invoice number
  • The participant's name, and NDIS participant number if you have given it to us
  • The service address and the date the work was actually carried out
  • A plain description of the support delivered, not just the word "mowing"
  • The amount payable, GST treatment, and our payment details

We can also provide a short written service agreement setting out the schedule, what is included, and how either side ends the arrangement. Some plan managers ask for one before the first payment. If yours needs a particular reference or purchase order number on the invoice, tell us once at booking and it goes on every invoice after that.

How Jay Pro Works With NDIS Participants

Yard maintenance for a participant is not the same job as yard maintenance for a rental agent, and we do not run it the same way. The things participants and support coordinators ask us for most are predictability and quiet competence, so that is what the service is built around.

  • The same crew wherever the run allows. Familiar faces at the gate matter, particularly for participants with psychosocial disability or anyone who finds unannounced visitors difficult.
  • Notice before we arrive. A call or message ahead of the visit, and a fixed day in the fortnight rather than a floating one, so nothing lands as a surprise.
  • Access paths kept clear. We cut back grass and growth encroaching on the front path, driveway, side access and clothesline run, and blow the hard surfaces clean. Wet clippings on a concrete path are a genuine slip hazard, so they do not get left there.
  • Gates and pets. Gates are closed and latched as we found them. Tell us if there is a dog and we will work around it or wait.
  • No requirement to be home. Most participants prefer not to be. Give us side gate access and we will confirm by message when the visit is done.
  • Invoicing to whoever you nominate. You, a family member, a support coordinator or your plan manager. Set it once and it stays that way.
  • No lock-in contract. Pause, change frequency or stop at any time. Plans and circumstances change, and a mowing schedule should not be the hard part.

Every visit includes mowing, edging along paths, driveways and borders, a blow-down of hard surfaces, and removal of clippings. See what our standard lawn mowing service covers for the full scope.

NDIS Lawn Mowing Western Sydney

Jay Pro is based in Wentworthville, so Western Sydney is where we run the most work and where we can hold the tightest schedules. Regular NDIS yard maintenance runs go through Parramatta, Harris Park, Merrylands, Granville, Westmead, Blacktown, Seven Hills, Toongabbie, Mount Druitt, St Marys, Penrith, Kingswood, Liverpool, Fairfield, Cabramatta, Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and the suburbs around them.

Being local to Western Sydney has a practical effect on the service rather than just the marketing. Short travel between jobs means a fortnightly slot can be held on the same day each cycle, and it means a missed visit caused by weather can usually be picked up within a day or two rather than pushed to the next cycle. For participants who plan their week around a known schedule, that is the difference that counts.

Outside Western Sydney we cover more than 250 suburbs across Greater Sydney, including the Hills District, Inner West, North Shore, Northern Beaches, the St George area and the Sutherland Shire. Check our full list of Sydney service areas or call to confirm your suburb.

Getting Started

Call 0468 049 230 or request a free quote online. Tell us the address, how often you would like the lawn done, whether your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, and who should receive the invoice. We quote on the property first, so you have an exact price to check against your budget before any work begins.

If a yard has been left for a long time and the grass is well beyond mower height, the first visit is usually a clean-up rather than a mow, quoted separately, with the regular schedule starting afterwards. Mention it when you call so we bring the right gear the first time.

NDIS Lawn Mowing: Frequently Asked Questions

Funding, plan management and booking questions we are asked most often by participants, carers and support coordinators.

Does the NDIS cover lawn mowing?

It can, but it is not automatic. Lawn and yard maintenance sits within Core Supports under Assistance with Daily Life, treated as a household task. It is generally considered where the participant cannot safely do the work themselves because of their disability, where no other member of the household can reasonably do it, and where the support meets the reasonable and necessary test in section 34 of the NDIS Act 2013. Whether your particular plan will fund it depends on your goals and the way your plan was written, so confirm with your plan manager, support coordinator or local area coordinator before you book.

Can I use my NDIS funding for gardening?

Routine maintenance that keeps a yard safe and accessible is viewed very differently to landscaping. Mowing, edging, clearing overgrowth away from paths and gates, and removing clippings all relate directly to safe access and household upkeep. New garden beds, planting, turf laying and decorative landscaping are property improvements and are not usually funded. If your funding is intended for garden maintenance, keep the scope of the work to maintenance and keep the invoice description consistent with that.

How do I book lawn mowing using my NDIS plan?

Call 0468 049 230 or request a quote online and tell us how your plan is managed. If you are self-managed you pay the invoice and claim it back through the myplace participant portal. If you are plan-managed, give us your plan manager's email at booking and we send the invoice straight to them after each visit, so you never handle the payment. Either way we quote the property first, so you know the cost before anything is committed.

What NDIS budget category does lawn mowing come under?

Lawn mowing normally falls under Core Supports, in the Assistance with Daily Life support category, as a household or yard maintenance task. Core Supports funding is generally flexible across most core categories, which is why participants often have more room to arrange yard maintenance than they expect. Your plan manager can tell you exactly which category your funds sit in.

How do I book lawn mowing with my NDIS plan?

Call 0468 049 230 or request a quote online. Tell us the property address, roughly how often you want the lawn done, and whether your plan is self-managed or plan-managed. We quote on the property, agree a schedule, and then either invoice you directly or email the invoice to your plan manager each visit. There is no lock-in contract and you can change or pause the schedule at any time.

How much does NDIS lawn mowing cost?

Every property is different, so we do not publish rates. Call 0468 049 230 or request a free quote online and we will give you an exact price for your property before any work begins. Having the price in writing before the first visit also makes it easier to check the amount against your remaining Core Supports budget.

Can my support coordinator or plan manager book on my behalf?

Yes. Support coordinators, plan managers, carers and family members regularly arrange services with us for participants. We are happy to deal with whoever you nominate, and we will send confirmations and invoices to whichever email address you tell us to use.

What documentation do you provide for NDIS claims?

Each visit produces a dated tax invoice showing our business name and ABN, an invoice number, the service address, the date the work was carried out, a plain description of the support delivered, and the amount payable. If you give us your NDIS participant number and your plan manager's email address, we include the number on the invoice and send it straight to them. That is the format plan managers ask for.

Do I need to be home when you mow?

No. Most participants prefer not to have to be there. As long as we have side gate access, or you tell us where the key or gate code is, we can complete the visit and let you know when it is done. If you would rather always be home, tell us and we will book a time window that suits you.

Will the same team come to my property every visit?

We schedule the same crew to a property wherever the run allows. For participants who find unfamiliar people at the house stressful, that consistency matters more than anything else on the list, so tell us at booking and we will treat it as a scheduling requirement rather than a preference.

Do you provide NDIS lawn mowing in Western Sydney?

Yes. Western Sydney is our home patch. We are based in Wentworthville and run regular jobs through Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, Merrylands, Seven Hills, Liverpool, Mount Druitt, Castle Hill and the surrounding suburbs. We service more than 250 suburbs across Greater Sydney in total.

Can you also clear a yard that has become badly overgrown?

Yes. If the grass is well past mower height, that is a slashing job rather than a mow, and it is quoted separately as a one-off clean-up before a regular schedule starts. This is a common first job for participants who have been without a service for a while. Tell us at the quote stage so we bring the right equipment on the first visit.

This page is general information about how NDIS funding categories work, not financial or plan advice. Funding decisions are made by the NDIA and depend on your individual plan. Confirm your situation with your plan manager, support coordinator or local area coordinator.
