What a Gardener Does That a Mowing-Only Service Does Not
A lawn mowing round is a fast, repeatable job: cut, edge, blow down, move on. It keeps the turf right and it is the correct service for a property that is mostly lawn. What it does not touch is everything on the other side of the garden edge.
Gardening work is judgement work. Deciding how hard to cut a murraya back so it thickens instead of going bare. Knowing that a plant which looks dead in July is a frangipani that will come back in October. Telling a wanted self-seeded native from a weed. Pulling oxalis by the bulb rather than snapping the top off and leaving it to return in a fortnight. None of that fits inside a mowing round, and it is the reason gardens attached to a mowing-only service slowly decline while the lawn itself looks fine.
In practice most Sydney properties need both. We run lawn mowing and gardening on the same visit so you are not coordinating two trades around one back gate.
What a Gardening Visit Actually Covers
Scope varies with the property, but a standard visit works through the following. Anything you do not want done is simply left, and the time goes elsewhere.
Weeding beds and borders
Hand-weeding through planted beds, along fence lines, in gravel and between pavers. Roots out, not just tops off, so the same weeds are not back in a fortnight.
Pruning and deadheading
Shaping shrubs, cutting back spent growth, removing dead or diseased wood, and deadheading flowering plants to keep them producing.
Hedge and screen trimming
Trimming hedges, murraya, lilly pilly and photinia screens back to a clean line. Larger or overgrown hedges are handled as dedicated hedge work.
Mulching and bed topping
Topping up mulch to a useful depth, keeping it off plant stems, and levelling beds so water reaches roots instead of running off.
Edging and bed definition
Cutting a crisp edge between lawn and garden bed, and pulling back turf runners that have crept into planting.
Garden bed tidy and clearing
Clearing leaf litter, fallen branches, spent annuals and general debris out of beds, paths, courtyards and around entertaining areas.
Green waste removal
Everything cut, pulled or raked is loaded and taken away. Your bin is not left full and there is no pile on the nature strip.
Heavier work sits outside a routine visit and is quoted separately: overgrown blocks needing grass slashing, large or long-neglected hedges under hedge trimming, and full redesigns under garden landscaping.
One-Off Tidy-Up or an Ongoing Schedule?
These are genuinely different jobs, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason people feel they did not get value.
A one-off tidy-up is a reset. It suits a garden that has got away from you, a property going to market, a rental handover, an end-of-lease clean, or a visit before family arrive at Christmas. It is a longer, heavier visit — often several times the length of a routine one — and it typically produces a large volume of green waste. What it does not do is hold. A garden reset in October will need attention again by December.
An ongoing schedule is maintenance. Each visit is shorter because nothing has been allowed to get out of hand, weeds are removed before they seed, and hedges are trimmed lightly and often rather than cut hard once a year. Over a full season this is less total work than the tidy-up-and-neglect cycle, and the garden looks presentable the whole time rather than for three weeks after each blitz.
For a neglected garden the sensible sequence is both: one restoration visit to get back to a baseline, then a lighter ongoing rhythm to hold it. If you are not sure which you need, we will tell you at the quote rather than sell you the larger job by default. Ongoing scope and seasonal frequency are set out in detail on our garden maintenance Sydney page.
How Often Sydney Gardens Need a Gardener
Sydney's humid subtropical climate gives plants a long growing season and a short genuine dormancy. Growth surges from September as the soil warms, peaks through the humid summer months when storm rain and heat combine, eases through autumn, and slows but rarely stops over winter.
As a rough guide: a densely planted established garden wants a fortnightly visit from September to March and monthly from April to August. A moderately planted suburban garden sits well on monthly year-round with a couple of extra visits in the spring surge. A native or low-planting garden often needs only six to eight visits a year. Coastal and harbourside gardens carry more salt-burn and leaf drop; shaded inner-city courtyards grow less but collect more litter.
The honest test is not the calendar. If weeds are flowering, if you cannot see the edge between lawn and bed, or if mulch has thinned enough to show soil, the interval is too long.
Gardening for Pensioners, Seniors and Concession Card Holders
Garden work is one of the first things that becomes genuinely difficult to keep up with — the bending, the kneeling, the carrying of green waste to the bin. It is also the kind of work where an unreliable contractor causes real stress, because a missed visit means a garden that keeps growing.
Jay Pro holds concession rates for pensioners, seniors and DVA card holders across Sydney. Just as important as the rate is how the service runs: a consistent gardener rather than whoever is free, a predictable day so you know when someone will be at the gate, a phone call rather than an app if that suits you better, and green waste taken away so nothing is left for you to move.
We will also work to a smaller scope if that is what makes it affordable — the front garden only, or the paths and the bins area, rather than the whole property. Tell us the budget and we will tell you honestly what fits inside it.
Mention your Pensioner Concession Card, Seniors Card or DVA card when you call 0468 049 230 and the concession is applied to the quote before you decide anything.
If mowing is the main thing you need help with, our cheap lawn mowing for pensioners in Sydney page covers concession mowing, what is included and how the scheduling works. Garden work and mowing can be combined on the one visit.
What to Have Ready Before the First Visit
Six minutes of preparation makes a noticeable difference to what gets done in the time booked.
Clear vehicle and gate access
Move cars off the driveway and unlock side gates. If access is through a garage or a shared driveway, tell us at booking so we bring the right gear.
Secure pets
Dogs indoors or in a separate section of the yard. Line trimmers and blowers unsettle even calm animals, and open gates are a real risk.
Point out what stays
Self-seeded natives, plants you are growing on, a vegetable patch mid-crop. A gardener cannot tell a wanted seedling from a weed without being told.
Flag irrigation and cabling
Mark drip lines, pop-up sprinkler heads, garden lighting cable and anything shallow-buried. This is the single most common source of accidental damage.
Say what bothers you most
If the priority is the front garden before visitors arrive, or the weeds along the fence, say so. It changes how the hours are spent.
Confirm water and power access
An outdoor tap and a power point are useful for some tasks. If neither is available, we will bring our own arrangements.
Being home for the first visit is worth it even if you are never home again. Ten minutes walking the garden together settles the questions a gardener would otherwise have to guess at.
Where We Work
We are based in Wentworthville and work across Greater Sydney. Coverage is heaviest through Western Sydney — Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, the Hills — and extends through Ryde and Macquarie Park, the Inner West, the St George area and the Sutherland Shire. More than 250 suburbs are on the regular run.
Suburb-level pages covering local conditions and service availability are listed on our Sydney service areas directory, including Ryde, Penrith and Parramatta.
Strata schemes, body corporates and commercial properties are handled through commercial gardening, which covers scheduled grounds work, reporting and site-specific access requirements.
Booking, Quoting and What Happens Next
Quotes are free and given before any work starts. For most properties we can quote from a conversation and a few photos; for larger or long-neglected gardens we will come and look, because quoting that sight-unseen is how contractors end up asking for more money halfway through.
We work within the NSW permitted hours for powered garden equipment on every job — the same rules that apply to homeowners, with no commercial exemption. If you are unsure what those hours are, our guide to NSW lawn mowing and garden equipment restrictions sets them out by day, including strata by-laws.

Gardening Services Sydney — FAQs
Common questions about booking a gardener in Sydney, what is included, and how often gardens need attention.
What do gardening services in Sydney actually include?
A standard gardening visit covers weeding beds and borders, pruning and deadheading shrubs, trimming hedges and screens, topping up mulch, edging where lawn meets garden, clearing leaf litter and debris, and taking the green waste away. Mowing can be included on the same visit if you want the whole yard done at once.
What is the difference between a gardener and a lawn mowing service?
A mowing service cuts, edges and blows down the lawn. A gardener works on everything that is not lawn — the planted beds, shrubs, hedges, mulch, paths and courtyards. Most Sydney properties need both, which is why we run them together rather than making you book two trades.
How often should I book a gardener in Sydney?
Most established Sydney gardens sit comfortably on a monthly visit, moving to fortnightly through the spring and summer growth surge from roughly September to March. Low-planting or native gardens often only need six to eight visits a year. A neglected garden usually needs one longer restoration visit first, then a lighter ongoing rhythm.
Can I book a one-off garden tidy-up instead of an ongoing service?
Yes. One-off tidy-ups are common before an inspection, an open home, a rental handover or a family gathering. There is no requirement to commit to a schedule, though an ongoing booking generally keeps the garden in better condition for less work each visit.
How much do gardening services cost in Sydney?
Cost depends on the size of the garden, how much planting there is, how long it has been since the last tidy, and how much green waste comes out. Call 0468 049 230 or request a free quote online — we'll give you an exact price for your property before any work begins.
Do you take the green waste away?
Yes. All clippings, prunings, weeds and leaf litter are loaded and removed as part of the job unless you specifically ask us to leave material for your own compost or council bin. We do not leave piles on the nature strip.
Do you offer gardening services for pensioners and seniors in Sydney?
Yes. We hold concession rates for pensioners, seniors and DVA card holders across Sydney, and we work to a predictable schedule so there is no surprise about who is coming or when. Mention your card when you call 0468 049 230 and we will apply the concession to the quote.
Which Sydney suburbs do you cover for gardening?
We work across Greater Sydney from our Wentworthville base, with the heaviest coverage through Western Sydney, the Hills, the Inner West, Ryde and the St George area. Over 250 suburbs are on our regular run.
Do I need to be home during the gardening visit?
Not after the first visit. The initial visit is worth being present for so you can walk the garden with the gardener and point out what stays and what goes. After that, most clients leave a gate unlocked and come home to a finished garden.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Jay Pro carries public liability insurance and holds an ABN. Note that general gardening is not a licensed trade in NSW, so ask any gardener for their certificate of currency rather than relying on the word licensed. We work within the NSW permitted hours for powered garden equipment on every job, including weekends and public holidays.
